Are You An Unbelieving Believer?

Have you ever felt like there’s a gap between what Scripture says about you and how you see yourself? Like you believe in Jesus and His promises, but when it comes to walking in the power He’s given, you’re just not sure it applies to you? You’re not alone. A lot of believers face this. They know Christ, they love Him, yet they struggle to believe they’re actually equipped to do what He said they could.

The Bible is filled with truths about our identity in Christ. God didn’t just save us and leave us; He empowers us. But if we’re honest, many of us are caught somewhere between believing in God and truly believing God—believing that we can live out His promises with confidence.

Who Does God Say You Are?

The Bible makes it clear: you’re a new creation, God’s masterpiece, empowered by the Holy Spirit. But so often, we let past experiences, comparisons, or a lack of understanding rob us of living in the power He’s given us. Here are some reminders of what Scripture says about you:

  • You’re a New Creation: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17). You’re not just an improved version of yourself; you’re new.

  • You’re God’s Masterpiece: “For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10). He made you with purpose.

  • You’re Empowered by the Holy Spirit: Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be our Helper, our guide, and our strength (John 14:16-17).

  • You’re Called to Heal and to Love: Jesus told His followers, “They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mark 16:18). This wasn’t just a suggestion—it was a call to action. Through the Holy Spirit, we have access to supernatural gifts to bless and serve others.

If these truths are clear in Scripture, why do so many of us have trouble believing they’re true for us?

What Holds Us Back?

There are a few common roadblocks that keep believers from stepping into their God-given identity:

  1. Our Past
Mistakes, failures, and regrets can make us feel unworthy. But God’s grace covers our past and empowers us for the future.

  2. Comparison
It’s easy to look at others and feel like they’re “more spiritual.” But God didn’t make you to be a copy of someone else.

  3. Lack of Teaching
Many of us haven’t had solid teaching on the Holy Spirit and what it means to live empowered by Him. Without understanding, it’s easy to doubt.

  4. Unbelief in His Promises
Sometimes, it’s plain unbelief—not just doubting what God says about us but doubting what He says He’ll do. Healing, provision, salvation for loved ones, and fulfilling our purpose—God has made promises to us about each of these things, yet we often wrestle with believing they’re true for our lives. When we don’t see immediate results or when things don’t go the way we expect, we may start to question if God’s promises apply to us personally. But God’s promises are sure, whether we feel it or not.

Living in the Power of the Holy Spirit

When Jesus promised the Holy Spirit, He meant for us to have access to God’s power daily. The Spirit equips us to love, to speak truth, to believe for healing, and to walk in boldness. He also equips us with supernatural gifts and produces fruit in our lives that reflect God’s character.

  • The Gifts of the Holy Spirit: The Spirit brings gifts like prophecy, healing, wisdom, and knowledge (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). These aren’t just for a select few—they’re available to every believer, meant to build up the church and impact those around us.

  • The Fruit of the Spirit: The Spirit also produces fruit in our lives—qualities like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). These aren’t just ideals to strive for; they’re the natural outcome of a life surrendered to the Spirit.

That same power is at work in you today. The Holy Spirit is fully available to guide, empower, and transform every area of your life.

Steps to Walk Boldly in Who You Are

  1. Fill Your Mind with Scripture
The Bible renews our thinking. When we read and meditate on what God says, it changes how we see ourselves and the world.

  2. Speak Truth Over Yourself
There’s power in declaring what God says about you. Speaking Scripture builds our faith and pushes out doubt.

  3. Pray for Boldness
Pray for a fresh revelation of God’s promises. Ask Him to give you courage to live out the life He’s called you to.

  4. Stay in Community
Surround yourself with believers who will encourage you and speak life into you. Faith-filled friends remind us of God’s promises when we forget.

  5. Take Small Steps of Faith
Walking in God’s power isn’t always about huge steps. Start small—pray for others, share a word of encouragement. Watch as God works through you.

Jesus’ Promise of “Greater Works”

Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things” (John 14:12). He meant it. That promise is for you. When we believe what He says and act on it, we step into our true identity as His children.

Closing Encouragement

As a follower of Jesus, you are already chosen, empowered, and called to a higher purpose. Don’t let unbelief hold you back. Trust that God means what He says—about you and about what He promises to do in your life. Healing, provision, salvation for those we love, purpose, destiny—it’s all part of the abundant life He promises us. The gifts and fruit of the Spirit are available to each of us, and He’s equipped us to lay hands on the sick and see them recover, to love with His love, and to walk in faith that doesn’t waver.

So don’t settle for being an “unbelieving believer.” Trust that God’s promises apply to you. You’re equipped, you’re empowered, and you’re called. It’s time to live in that confidence and let God’s Spirit work in you in ways you never imagined.
