Trusting God Through Uncertain Times: Encouragement for Building Faith During Trials
Share
There’s something about uncertainty that gets under our skin, isn’t there? We crave stability, security, and predictability. Yet, the reality is that life rarely follows the tidy little path we’ve mapped out in our minds. At one point or another, we all face seasons of uncertainty—whether it’s an unexpected job loss, a health diagnosis that shakes us to our core, or simply not knowing what the future holds.
When life throws us these curveballs, the question we’re often left asking is, “How do I trust God in this?” It’s a question I’ve asked more times than I can count. But the good news is that we don’t have to navigate these turbulent waters alone. Scripture is overflowing with stories of men and women who walked through trials, questions, and confusion—yet found that God was faithful every step of the way. And as we look to these examples, we learn how to trust Him more deeply in our own moments of uncertainty.
The Tension of Uncertainty: Why Is It So Hard to Trust?
Let’s be honest—trusting God is easier said than done, especially when life feels like it’s unraveling at the seams. We want to believe that God is in control, that He has a plan, and that He will work everything out for our good, but sometimes the evidence before our eyes seems to tell a different story.
Here’s the thing: trusting God doesn’t mean ignoring reality or pretending that life isn’t hard. It means choosing to believe that in spite of what we see, God is still good. It’s about anchoring ourselves in the truth of who God is, even when our circumstances are shaky.
One of my favorite examples of this tension is found in the story of Abraham. In Genesis 12, God called Abraham to leave his home and go to a land He would show him—a place Abraham had never been, with no detailed map or itinerary. Talk about uncertainty! But Abraham trusted God’s promise, even when it didn’t make sense. And as we read in Hebrews 11:8, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going” (NKJV).
That’s the thing about trusting God—it often means moving forward without all the answers. It’s walking by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), trusting that God is working behind the scenes, even when we can’t see it.
God’s Faithfulness in the Waiting
One of the hardest parts of trusting God in uncertain times is the waiting. Waiting for answers, waiting for direction, waiting for a breakthrough—it can feel agonizing. But here’s the truth: God does some of His best work in the waiting. It’s in those moments of uncertainty that our faith is tested and refined. It’s where we learn to rely on God in ways we never would have if life had gone according to our plan.
Take the story of Joseph, for example. As a young man, Joseph had big dreams—literally. God gave him visions of greatness, but those dreams seemed to come crashing down when his own brothers betrayed him and sold him into slavery. If that wasn’t enough, Joseph was later falsely accused and thrown into prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Talk about uncertainty! Joseph could have easily thrown in the towel and assumed that God had forgotten him.
But God hadn’t forgotten Joseph. In fact, He was using those very trials to prepare Joseph for the incredible future He had planned. Years later, when Joseph was promoted to a position of great power in Egypt, he was able to look back and say to his brothers, “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive” (Genesis 50:20, NKJV).
God’s faithfulness to Joseph reminds us that even when life takes unexpected twists and turns, God is still in control. He sees the bigger picture, and He knows how to turn even the most painful situations into something good. But often, it takes time. The waiting is hard, but it’s in the waiting that God is working.
The Role of Prayer in Uncertainty
When we’re facing uncertain times, one of the most powerful tools we have is prayer. Prayer doesn’t magically make our problems disappear, but it connects us with the One who holds the answers. It’s through prayer that we invite God into our circumstances and allow Him to work in ways that are beyond our understanding.
Philippians 4:6-7 gives us this beautiful encouragement: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (NKJV). Notice that the peace of God comes after we’ve brought our requests to Him. It doesn’t always mean our situation will change immediately, but our hearts and minds are transformed by the peace that only God can give.
In times of uncertainty, prayer isn’t just about asking God to fix our problems. It’s about realigning our hearts with His. It’s about surrendering our fears, our doubts, and our confusion to Him, and choosing to trust that He knows what He’s doing—even when we don’t.
One of the most honest prayers we can pray in times of uncertainty is the prayer of surrender: “Lord, I don’t understand what You’re doing, but I trust You.” It’s a simple prayer, but it carries profound power. When we release control and place our trust in God’s hands, we open the door for Him to do what only He can do.
Remembering God’s Character
In seasons of uncertainty, it’s easy to forget who God is. Our circumstances can feel so overwhelming that we start to doubt His goodness, His faithfulness, and His love for us. That’s why it’s so important to remind ourselves of God’s character—especially when life feels uncertain.
Scripture is filled with reminders of who God is and what He has done. He is our provider (Philippians 4:19), our healer (Psalm 103:3), our refuge (Psalm 46:1), and our peace (Isaiah 26:3). He is faithful to His promises (Deuteronomy 7:9), and He never leaves us or forsakes us (Hebrews 13:5). These aren’t just nice sentiments; they are truths that we can anchor our souls to when life feels out of control.
One of my favorite passages to meditate on during uncertain times is Lamentations 3:22-23, which says, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (NKJV). Even when we don’t understand what’s happening, we can rest in the truth that God’s mercies are new every morning. He is faithful, even when life is anything but.
Trusting God with the Outcome
Sometimes, the hardest part of trusting God is letting go of our desired outcome. We have a picture in our minds of how we think things should go, and when life doesn’t follow that script, we start to panic. But trusting God means releasing our grip on the outcome and choosing to believe that His plan is better than ours.
Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us of this truth: “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts’” (NKJV). God’s ways are higher than ours. His perspective is greater, and His plans are far more beautiful than anything we could imagine.
When we trust God with the outcome, we open ourselves up to the possibility that He might be doing something greater than we ever dreamed. It doesn’t mean the process won’t be painful, but it does mean that the end result will be worth it.
Encouragement for the Journey
If you’re walking through a season of uncertainty right now, I want to encourage you: God sees you. He knows the fears and doubts that swirl around in your mind, and He is with you in the midst of it all. You don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t have to know what’s going to happen next. All you need to do is take the next step of faith, trusting that God is leading you, even when the path isn’t clear.
And remember, you’re not alone. Throughout Scripture, we see story after story of men and women who faced uncertainty and came out on the other side with a deeper faith in God. From Abraham to Joseph to David to Mary, the Bible is full of examples of people who trusted God in the middle of the unknown—and He didn’t let them down.
God won’t let you down either. He is faithful, and He is for you. Even in the midst of uncertainty, you can trust that He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28).
Trusting God Through Trials: A Final Word
Walking through uncertainty is never easy. It challenges us, stretches us, and forces us to confront our fears and doubts. But it’s also an invitation—an invitation to lean into God’s faithfulness, to trust Him more deeply, and to experience His peace in ways we never thought possible.
As you navigate this season of uncertainty, may you find comfort in knowing that God is with you every step of the way. He sees your struggle, He hears your prayers, and He is working behind the scenes, even when you can’t see it. Your role isn’t to have all the answers—it’s to trust the One who does.
As you walk through trials and face uncertainties, remember that God’s character never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The same God who led Abraham to a land he didn’t know, the same God who brought Joseph through betrayal and imprisonment, and the same God who calmed the storm for His disciples is with you. He’s trustworthy, faithful, and good.
The Power of Testimonies in Building Faith
One of the most powerful ways to remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness in uncertain times is by recalling testimonies. These are the stories of God’s provision, healing, and breakthroughs that encourage us to keep trusting. Whether it’s your own testimony or the stories of others, reflecting on how God has moved in the past strengthens your faith for the future.
In Revelation 12:11, we’re told that believers “overcame [the enemy] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” (NKJV). There’s power in remembering and proclaiming what God has done. When you find yourself struggling to trust God, take a moment to recall the times He came through for you. Write them down. Share them with a friend. Speak them aloud. These testimonies become anchors in the storm, reminding you that if God was faithful then, He will be faithful now.
Living in Faith, Not Fear
Fear is one of the greatest obstacles to trusting God in uncertain times. It creeps in and whispers lies—lies that say God has abandoned you, that things will never get better, or that you’re on your own. But fear is not from God. In fact, 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (NKJV).
When fear tries to overtake your heart, it’s crucial to combat it with the truth of God’s Word. Speak verses that remind you of His power and love. Declare that He has not given you a spirit of fear, but of a sound mind. Fear may knock on the door, but it doesn’t have to control your decisions. When you choose faith over fear, you’re making a powerful declaration: that God is bigger than the unknown, and His plans for you are good.
Strengthening Your Faith Muscle
Faith is a lot like a muscle—it grows stronger the more you use it. Just as lifting weights builds physical strength, exercising faith builds spiritual strength. Each time you choose to trust God in the face of uncertainty, you’re strengthening your faith muscle.
The beautiful thing about faith is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Jesus said that even faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains (Matthew 17:20). So don’t worry if your faith feels small or shaky in this season. God can work with whatever you have. Just take that next step of trust, even if it’s a baby step.
Trusting God for the Long Haul
Trusting God isn’t just about getting through one difficult season—it’s about learning to trust Him for the long haul. Life will always have its uncertainties, its ups and downs, its unexpected twists and turns. But the more you practice trusting God in the everyday moments, the more prepared you’ll be when the big challenges come.
Trusting God is a lifelong journey. It’s a relationship that deepens over time as you see His faithfulness again and again. And the more you trust Him, the more peace, joy, and confidence you’ll experience, even when life feels uncertain.
Final Encouragement: You’re Not Alone
If you’re in the middle of a season where trusting God feels impossible, I want to remind you that you’re not alone. Not only is God with you, but you’re also part of a community of believers who are walking this same journey of faith. Lean on them. Share your struggles with trusted friends or mentors. Pray together, encourage one another, and remind each other of God’s promises.
And most importantly, lean on the One who promises to never leave you or forsake you. God’s faithfulness isn’t dependent on your ability to trust perfectly—it’s dependent on His unchanging nature. He’s faithful, even when you’re unsure. He’s trustworthy, even when your faith feels weak.
So today, take a deep breath. Release the need to have all the answers. Trust that God is working in the waiting and believe that He is writing a beautiful story with your life—one that will reflect His glory and goodness, even in the most uncertain times.
