5 Savory Breakfasts That'll Make You Forget Cereal Exists
The first time I saw salad on a breakfast bar, I was on my first mission trip to Africa, standing in a hotel breakfast line completely confused. Cucumbers? Tomatoes? At 7 a.m.? I'd grown up thinking breakfast meant sweets — cereal, pancakes, maybe some fruit if I was feeling healthy. Occasionally some eggs, but never vegetables!
It’s funny how your taste changes as you learn to eat a variety of healthy food and not rely on go to processed foods.
These days one of my very favorite breakfast is a cold sweet potato topped with a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, a fried egg, and a spoonful of kimchi. It sounds like an odd combination until you take the first bite — creamy, savory, a little tangy, a little spicy. It keeps me full for hours, and it doesn't spike my blood sugar the way a bowl of cereal would.
If you're ready to trade sugary breakfasts for something that actually fuels you, here are five savory breakfasts worth adding to your rotation.
1. Cold Sweet Potato, EVOO, Fried Egg & Kimchi
Like I said, this is my personal favorite.
· 1 medium roasted sweet potato, cooled (baked the night before works great)
1 tablespoon (15 ml) extra virgin olive oil
1 fried egg
2–3 tablespoons kimchi (More if you are a kimchi lover like I am.)
Split the cold sweet potato open, drizzle with the olive oil, top with the fried egg, and finish with kimchi. The contrast of cold sweet potato, warm egg, and tangy kimchi is what makes this one work.
(Optional: Layer this on top of mixed greens for even more nutrition and flavor.)
2. Savory Oatmeal with Egg, Spinach & Feta
Oatmeal doesn't have to be sweet. Cook your oats in broth instead of water, then top with a soft-boiled or fried egg, a handful of wilted spinach, and a sprinkle of feta. A pinch of black pepper finishes it off. It's warm, filling, and full of protein.
3. Breakfast Salad with Fried Egg & Avocado
This one's a direct nod to that hotel breakfast bar in Africa. Toss together chopped cucumber, tomato, and greens, top with sliced avocado and a fried egg (let the yolk run — it becomes the dressing), and finish with a sprinkle of everything-bagel seasoning. Simple, fresh, and surprisingly satisfying first thing in the morning.
4. Mediterranean Breakfast Bowl
Layer warm chickpeas, chopped cucumber and tomato, a scoop of plain yogurt, and a soft-boiled egg in a bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon. This one travels well too — pack it in a container the night before and add the egg fresh in the morning.
5. Sweet Potato Toast with Avocado & Egg
Slice a sweet potato lengthwise into ¼-inch (½ cm) planks and toast them (in a toaster or oven) until fork-tender. Top with smashed avocado, a fried or poached egg, and a dash of hot sauce. It's the naturally sweet, gluten-free answer to avocado toast.
The takeaway: breakfast doesn't have to be sweet to be good — or good to be sweet. Once you start leaning savory, you may find yourself more satisfied, more energized, and a lot less hungry by 10 a.m.
